Orientation Flights get cadets up in the air
where they can learn hands on with a pilot how an aircrafts works! Each
cadet gets ten vouchers which can be used towards the cost of these
flights. Five of these flights will be
in a powered aircraft such as a Cessna 172 or Cessna 182 and five in a
non-powered glider.
Cadets will ride "shotgun" in the Co-Pilots seat as the PIC (Pilot In Command) explains the aircraft's instruments, control surfaces, and flight mechanics. The cadet has the opportunity to hold and manipulate the controls and get a feel for the plane while the PIC directs the cadets movements. Prior to getting in, the cadet will help with the pre-flight safety check - joining the pilot in walk around the aircraft Together they will check for moisture in the fuel, deformations in the surfaces of the aircraft, operation of control surfaces and even kick the tires (well not really). The goal of this program is to give cadets a practical application for the skills they learn in the class as a part of CAP's Aerospace Education Program while increasing enthusiasm and knowledge of aerospace technologies and applications.
