Welcome!
Welcome to DurangoCAP.com! This is the internet home of the Civil Air Patrol - San Juan Composite Squadron, based in Durango, Colorado.

Commander PictureFrom the Commander

Since 1941, Civil Air Patrol has offered men and women of almost all ages the opportunity to serve their communities. I am very proud to be a part of CAP today and am moved everyday by the achievement of our cadets, the selflessness of our offficers and the support of our CAP parents.

I joined CAP as a cadet in December of 1997 and have maintained an active role in 3 CAP Squadrons in Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. Now as Squadron Commander I have the oppurtunity to grow the unit here into an exemplary group of professional volunteers ready to respond when needed.

I am very pleased to announce that I have appointed two new deputies for the unit: Capt Jeff Bynum as Deputy Commander for Seniors and Capt Debrah Archer as Deputy Commander for Cadets. Both officers have a strong background of experience and will be intrumental in making San Juan Composite Squadron a model CAP unit.

I am please also to announce that Squadron membership currently stands at 52 members! Of that, 30 are cadet members. We have also had our cadet advancing rank and have 1 Cadet Capt, and soon some new cadet 2LTs to boast!

Please join me in congratulating Capt Mark Hohle in his appointment as Colorado Wing Stan/Eval Officer. Locally Capt Hohle is our Safety Officer delivering breifings on a range of topics pertaining to aviation and good driving habbits. Capt Hohle is also a CFII will continue to be a strong asset for the unit's flying program.

In the pilot side of the unit, we currently have 3 mission pilots, cadet o-ride pilots and we are working towards more.

We have really gathered some steam and should have a wonderful summer ahead of us! I want to encourage members to keep up the good work and to bring along any interested individuals who may want to share in the CAP experience. Remember to stay safe so we can GET THE MISSION DONE!

Here is one of our recent safety topics:

From 2 March 2010's Meeting

Our national safety team would like us to make sure our fleet is well maintained. The area they covered pertains to our Vehicle fleet and avoiding the possibility of tread and tire separation. The materials in tires have been found to have a life of about 6 years regardless of use. Even tires stored unused may have become defective due to material degradation over time. Recently tire companies have placed the manufacture date on the outter-out wall of the tire for easy viewing (previously located in the outter-in wall requiring removing the wheel or climbing under your car to view. ABC website has more.
How to read the code to tell how old your tire really is.
An Animation of how the material degrades (No audio)
Retailers are aware of how to read the manufacture date, and that tires SHOULD be changed out every 6 years regardless of tread condition but will sell consumers tires well over the safety date at reduced prices or even full price.
Video catches retailers selling consumers tires as old as 12 years
